Implications of Diplomacy for Security in the Strategic Positioning of Colombia within Regional Peace and Security: A View of the Challenges and Opportunities of Integration into the North Triangle of Central America

Abstract

This article not only presents the scope and contents of diplomacy for security, but also assesses the relevance of the new national integration strategy put into practice, allowing the identification of some lessons and recommendations relevant to Colombia’s goal of becoming a leading actor in the sphere of regional and global peace and security in the near future. For this purpose, the objectives and scope of Diplomacy for Colombian Security will be analyzed in the light of the Defense Diplomacy concept. Subsequently, the set of challenges and opportunities of Colombian integration into the North Triangle of Central America will be identified and reviewed thoughtfully, upon an analytical and projective review of Diplomacy for Security. Finally, the implications of Diplomacy for Security in the country’s strategic positioning will be examined, based on the lessons, opportunities and present and future challenges identified in the experience at the Northern Triangle of Central America.
