OBTENTION OF BRIQUETTES FROM COKE DUST WASTE AS AN ALTERNATIVE FUEL FOR THE INDUSTRY

Keywords: Coke, fuel, agglomeration, energetic transition, sustainability

Abstract

This document describes the findings of the coke powder briquetization project conducted at Germán Franco Carbón SAS. Coke dust residues of seven different granulometric distributions are used as raw material and corn starch mixed with demineralized water as a binder. Briquettes obtained exhibit a calorific power that is approximately 17% lower than that of the commercial coke sample. However, despite the lower calorific power, the briquettes still possess a calorific power similar to that of a high volatile thermal coal, which typically falls within the range of 5800 to 7800 kcal/kg.  Additionally, the ignition temperature of the briquettes is recorded to be 700 ºC, which is 90 ºC higher than the ignition temperature of the coke sample. In conclusion, it can be stated that briquettes offer an alternative to using coke in combustion processes. One key advantage of briquettes is that they can be manufactured using residual powders from the coking process, eliminating the need for additional coal. This aspect makes briquettes a sustainable option that contributes to more environmentally friendly and productive processes.
