Is University Accreditation Relevant?
Impact of Institutional Accreditation Processes on the Salaries of University Graduates in Colombia
Abstract
The study examines the impact of institutional university accreditation in Colombia, granted by the Consejo Nacional de Acreditación (CNA), on the salaries of graduates from undergraduate programs. Employing a differencesin- differences event study approach, it draws on data from the Saber-Pro exams, accreditation reports from the Ministry of National Education, and information from the Labor Observatory for Education in Colombia, covering the period from 2012 to 2015. The findings are consistent, robust, and statistically indistinguishable from zero regarding the effect of accreditation on graduate salaries. This study offers two key contributions: (i) it provides no empirical evidence supporting the signaling effect of university accreditation in the labor market, and (ii) it addresses the limitations of external validity present in previous research on higher education returns in Colombia.
