Socio-health characterization of women voluntarily serving in the military on the Colombian Caribbean Coast

Abstract

Women’s health should be evaluated holistically, considering life stages, behavioral aspects, social roles, underlying pathologies, and other relevant factors. These elements must be thoroughly assessed by healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care. This study aims to examine the socioeconomic, motivational, and health characteristics of women serving voluntarily
in the military on the northern coast of Colombia. Methodology: This observational, descriptive study focused on the first and second contingents of women performing voluntary military service on Colombia’s northern coast. Data were collected through surveys after obtaining informed consent. Analysis was conducted using Epi Info v7.2.6.0, employing frequencies, percentages, prevalence rates (prs), and odds ratios (ors) with a 95% confidence interval. Results: The participants had an average age of 19.5 years. A majority belonged to socioeconomic strata 1 (53.75%) and 2 (30%). Moreover, 57.5% completed technician or technological programs. Emotional motivations drove 51.25% of participants to enlist, while 36.25% sought to gain experience before pursuing a longterm military career. Discussion: Attitudes toward military service were primarily influenced by socioeconomic factors rather than socio-political considerations. Motivations included aspirations for
self-fulfillment and financial stability. Additionally, the health and well-being of troops are critical to military operations, underscoring their impact on strategic outcomes. Conclusion: Socioeconomic and psychological factors, along with a strong desire for self-improvement, significantly influence the voluntary military service of women from the Colombian Caribbean coast.
