Proceedings of the First Symposium on Human Rights, Society, and Peace
2025
Abstract
On May 17, 2024, the first Symposium on Human Rights, Society, and Peace was held at the Universidad Militar de Nueva Granada (UMNG), inaugurated by Rector MG Javier Alberto Ayala Amaya. This event is part of the 2024-2028 Rectoral Plan, which promotes comprehensive education in human rights and peace. The symposium is framed within the context of the 2016 peace agreements with the FARC-EP and Colombia’s reputation for peaceful conflict resolution.
The main goal of the symposium was to discuss and reflect on the lessons from the Field Human Rights Course: Europe Otzenhausen XXXII Edition, focused on Strategic Leadership in Human Rights and Peace Education. Presentations covered topics such as the influence of sociolinguistic anthropology and competencies in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) on peace, corporate social responsibility in protecting rights, and the impact of ecocide in Colombia. The role of education in building a culture of peace was also discussed, along with analyses of the Total Peace policy and the rights of Venezuelan migrants.
The event reaffirms UMNG’s commitment to human rights and peace education and sets a precedent for future gatherings by promoting ongoing academic and social dialogue.
